Tropea



Tropea is situated on a spectacular sanstone cliff. It is magnificently positioned between the gulf of Sant'Eufemia and Gioia Tauro. Tropea is undoubtedly, one of the most picturesque centres and more to offer artistically, than the province of Vibo Valentia. Today it is an exlusive bathing centre, containing a tourist port and fishing facilities. Tropea is undoubtedly one of the most beatifull historical centres and better preserved area of the region Calabria.



Gastronomy and Specialities

A great gastronomic wealth is contained in fruits that are grown and picked in Calabria. There is a unique taste and smell of a unique nature, made of century old woods, of mediterranean green. It is known for the simplicity of the dishes, whit their strong and unique taste and in the uniqueness culinary traditions combined with the desire to protect them. Also important to Calabria cusine is fish, tuna, swordfish, codfish, cernia, mullets and trouts (from rivers and lakes), which are roasted on the grill or cooked in sauces with aromatic spices, create mouth watery dishes, which are indeed envied by the entiere world. To conclude one must not forget the "royal" wine. Very much appreciated is the Cirò which is produced in the sunny vineyards of Cirò, but also well know are other wine house from Bivongi, Crati, Greco di Gerace etc. which are to be appreciated and for both their good taste and aroma.



Brief History

Dalle origini assai antiche, il suo territorio conserva cospicue tracce di stanziamenti preistorici, ma anche testimonianze di frequentazione greca e romana. Fu sede vescovile dal VIII secolo d.C. e subì poi nel corso del tempo, l'occupazione di Arabi Normanni e Aragonesi. Fiorente centro marinaro, intrattenne rapporti commerciali con tutto il mediterraneo. Il centro storico è ricco di chiese che dimostrano che tropea era considerata la vera capitale del Capo Vaticano, si possono ammirare la cattedrale romana risalente all' XI secolo, e le chiese di S.Francesco d'Assisi e di Santa Maria della Neve, oltre a quella assai suggestiva, di Santa Maria dell'Isola, che sorge ai piedi della città su una piccola lingua di terra protesa verso il mare.
